Proverbs 1

Hi, Guys. This time I am going to share with you about proverbs. Have you heard of people saying, "like father, like son", or "seeing is believing"? I believe some of you have.

Those two sayings are known as proverbs. People often use them to deliver their messages. They are often effective because they are nice to hear as they rhyme. As a result, They are easy to remember. And more importantly, they express truth based on common sense.

Now, do you know what the two proverbs above actually mean?

Right! Before we talk more about proverbs and their meanings, let us first see what a proverb is. According to Wikipedia, a proverb is a simple and concrete saying, popularly known and repeated, that expresses a truth based on common sense or the practical experience of humanity.

This time, we are going to learn 5 common proverbs along with their meanings and how we use them in examples.

1. Like father, like son.
This proverb means that a son reflects the personality or the appearance of his father.

Examples:
Dad: Mom, can you cook me fried rice, please?
Son: me, too! I love fried rice.
Mom: Like father, like son.

Shelly: Hans, look at the way James speaks. So confidently. He is very much like his father that way.
Hans: Yeah... Like father, like son.

2. Seeing is believing.
This means that one will believe something when he or she sees it or experience it by himself or herself.

Examples:
Gea: Oh God. Jake did not believe I got 100 for my maths exam.
Jill: Don\t worry. He will when he sees your exam paper. Seeing is believing, right?
Gea: I guess you are right.

Lia: David is the seeing is believing that kind of peson. So, you need to show him the proof. Otherwise, he will not believe in you.
Tim: You have got a good point there. Thanks.

3. Don't count the chickens before they hatch.
This proverb is so true. It teaches us not to acknowledge something or not to claim something that has not come true yet. Things may change as they go. As a consequence, the result might not turn out as expected.

Examples:
Welly: Well... I will sell around 10 houses this minth and I will get a lot of money from the commission of it. I plan to buy a house near yours next month.
Spencer: How many houses have you sold so far?
Welly : I haven't sold any but I am optimistic I will sell 10 this month and buy a house.
Spencer: Don't count the chickens before they hatch or you will get disappointed.

Maria: Jill, did you buy a size S dress? I thought you were size medium.
Jill: Yes, you're right, Maria. I am size medium now. But in two weeks time I will be size small. You know what? I am on a diet program now.
Maria: Jill, don't count the chickens before they hatch. What if your diet program does work out well?

4. Good things will come to those who wait.
This one implies that if you are patient enough to wait, what you want or expect will come true sooner or later.

Examples:
Brian: Hey, Mate. Why do you look so sad?
Leo: It's about my career. I have been working for two years but I have not got my promotion yet.
Brian: Well, keep showing your good performance, Man. Good things will come to those who wait.
Leo: Sure I will. Thank you.

Peter: Gina, how is your business?
Gina: it's just so so, Pete. I am a bit worried now. I have worked hard days and nights but I have not seen it happening.
Peter: Be patient, Gina. People say "Good things will come to those who wait". Your time will come.
Gina: That's a very good saying, Pete. Thanks very much.

5. Two heads are better than one.
This saying tells us that when you are trying to solve a problem, invite somebody to help you sort the thing out. Together, you will come up with a better idea or solution.

Examples:
Haily: What's the matter with you, Kaila?
Kaila: Well, I still cannot find the right thing to buy Bella for her birthday?
Haily: Alright. I will help you with that. You know two heads are better than one.
Kaila: Hahahaa... You are like my old man. But, alright. Let's think together.

Tania could not find an effective way to raise her sales. So, she tried to share her problem with her brother in case he could help her find a solution. She always believes that two heads are better than one.

Well, Guys. I think that will do for now. I will write more about proverbs some other time. If you have a comment or a suggestion, please feel free to write one here in the comment box. Thank you for reading my blog. Cheers.
