Proverbs 2

Hi, Guys...
Here are more proverbs with their meanings and how they are used contextually. I hope you'll like them.

1. Penny wise, pound foolish.
When you are very careful about small amounts of money, but rather careless about bigger amounts of money, then you are penny wise, pound foolish.

Examples:
My brother is truly penny wise, pound foolish. He would not spend money on candies or snacks, but he would buy expensive branded shoes which would cost him a fortune.

Mary is very careful about spending her money on foods or books. But when it comes to buying a bag, she does not really care about the price. If she likes it, she will get it. Full stop. She is what we call as penny wise, pound foolish.

2. The pen is mightier than the sword.
This one means that it is more effective to try to convince people with ideas and words than to force people to do what you want.

Examples:
X: Pam, I have asked Tim to do the night shift, but he rejected.
Y: Okay. I will talk to him personally after this.
X: (The next day) Pam, how was it? Did Tim agree doing the night shift?
Y: Yes, sure. He did not mind at all.
X: Really? He was not like that before.
Y: The pen is mightier than the sword, I guess.

I know that you are a manager. But when you want somebody else to do something for you, try to say it nicely. You know, the pen is mightier than the sword.

3. When in Rome, do as the Romans.
Act the way that the people around you are acting. This phrase might come in handy when you're traveling abroad notice that people do things differently than you're used to.

Examples:
X: Dane, have you prepared everything for your homestay?
Y: Yes, Mom.
X: Good. Now, you must remember, when in Rome, do as the Romans. Try to learn their habits and how they do things, and you must adapt.
Y: Ok, Mom. i will.

X: Rika, why do we have to eat with chopsticks? It's not comfortable.
Y: Shhh! Quiet. When in Rome, do as the Romans. Remember that saying?
X: Alright!

4. No man is an island.
Everyone needs help from other people. As a result, you can't live completely independently.

Examples:
X: I don't want to be in the same team with Ron.
Y: But why?
X: I just don't like him.
Y: No man is an island. You can't live alone. You need the people around you when you are in trouble. So, just try mingling with Ron. He is alright.
X: What ever!

Every successful person gains their success with the help of other people. However good they are, they cannot succeed alone. No man is an island.

5. People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.
This one means that we shoul not criticize other people if we're not perfect ourselves.

Examples:
X: Look at Hanna! She keeps talking about how careless Naomi is. She is not perfect herself. She has also made a couple of mistakes when she was organising the farewel event.
Y: How true! People who live in glass houses should not throw stones. Don't you think so?

X: How could you forget the paper? We need it for our biology class.
Y: Yeah! That's so ridiculous.
Z: Guys! People who live in glass houses should not throw stones. Do you still remember what happened at Jane's party?
X & Y: Sorry...

6. Birds of a feather flock together.
This one is about people who like to spend time with others who are similar to them.

Examples:
X: Hey, look at Jill and Diane. They are always together where they go.
Y: Yes... I think it's because they have a lot of similarities. You know, birds of a feather flock together.
X: So true.

X: It's so nice to see the girls get on well with each other.
Y: Well, I guess it's because they have the same hobbies. Birds of a feather flock together, they say :-).
